Depressingly Blue

Posted by Feb 12, 2011

Plagued by a splintered chronological order, Blue Valentine is a miserable romantic drama depicting the breakdown of a young married couple. Director Derek Cianfrance switches back and forth between the cheerful beginning and gloomy ending stages of the couples' relationship, but never cohesively bridges the two periods. The cause for the couples' deterioration is left to the audience's imagination, and the abruptly flickering, clumsily plotted 'Blue Valentine' merely becomes an array of contrasting emotions. Despite Ryan Gosling's and Michelle Williams' excellent performances as the broken couple, the gratuitous sex, tears, and depression within the film wear it into a tedious, meandering melodrama lacking a strong emotional core. 1 out of 4 Stars
