Another Year, Another Terrible Film

Posted Jan 31, 2011

A series of irrelevant, unrelated conversations with no glue to bind them together, Another Year chronicles the depressing, dull tale of an old married couple who struggle to maintain their happiness as the world around them swirls with depression. Writer and director Mike Leigh has crafted a well-observed but pointless character study whose words cohere better in a thesis paper than a true film with elements of emotion, plot and storytelling. Worse, Leigh's analysis never conveys the most important component of the plot: how the depressed condition of surrounding friends ultimately impacts the happiness of the main characters. Not even Lesley Manville's great supporting performance can save this directionless trash from wandering into No Man's Land. 0.5 out of 4 Stars
