One Strong Punch
Posted Jan 23, 2011
Featuring one of the strongest ensemble casts of the year, 'The Fighter' is a conventional yet strongly impacting boxing film about the comeback of boxer Micky Ward. Christian Bale's performance excellently depicts Micky's trainer and supporter, Dicky, the maniacal and innerly broken half-brother whose troubles with the law and disloyalty have helped cause Micky's recent career failures, while Melissa Leo exceptionally captures the fury and toughness of Micky’s frightening matriarch. These standout performances provide amazing insight into the shattered, dysfunctional family that is no longer the supportive backbone of Micky that it used to be. Yet through the support and intelligence of Charlene, the new girlfriend of Micky superbly rendered by Amy Adams, the confidence of a once humiliated loser is restored, and a raw, rough-hewn tenderness and emotionally moving spirit, similar to that of boxing classics such as Rocky and Raging Bull, is sparked in a film all about toughness. ‘The Fighter’ is nothing short of a knockout. 3.5 out of 4 stars
