Passable as Grit

Posted Dec 28, 2010

An endless and violent drag, True Grit is one of the worst disappointments of the year. Jeff Bridges stars in a terrible performance as the totally speech-slurred US marshall helping a headstrong teenager avenge the murder of her father. As the pair meander through the woods with no target in sight, bursts of unexplained and often gratuitous violence occur to merely enliven the increasingly confusing story. Wearing on True Grit is a lack of chemistry and emotional insight within the characters -- even the anger that motivates this teenager to avenge her father's death is never communicated to the audience. Ending this botch of a film is an abrupt climax that fails to have any poignancy due to awful violence, which sadly seems to sum up the film itself. 0.5 Star

Hey brother, please read "True Grit" by Charles Portis. It's an exceptional little book, with terrific dialog. Here's an interesting entry about Portis:
