A Thrilling 'Town'

Posted Dec 05, 2010

From its grisly opening moments to its touching ending, The Town is a great crime thriller portraying a bank robber on the tortuous road to redemption. Director Ben Affleck excellently employs a strong use of contrast throughout The Town, smoothly transitioning between scenes showing MacRay's inner soul of compassion and his outer mask of violence. Moreover, The Town also explores the tragedy and grievances that crime causes and in turn creates a poignancy that manages to emotionally affect the audience. But Affleck does not emphasize this theme enough to make this film memorable, perhaps due to its excessive focus on MacRay's heisting and not his redemption. Still, a knockout cast and well-developed plot make The Town an unmissable hit. 3.5 stars
